First of all, in the driver standings, it follows the result of the Australian race. Button is therefore the first leader with 10 points, followed by his teammate from Brawn GP, Rubens Barrichello, with 8 points. The Italian, Jarno Trulli, is 3rd with 6 points, showing that his team, Toyota, is on track because his teammate, Timo Glock, is 5th with 4 points.
Lewis Hamilton is positioned between these two drivers with 5 points. At the bottom of the standings, we have Fernando Alonso with 3 points, Nico Rosberg who managed to take 2 points even with faulty tires, and finally Sébastien Buemi who earns his first career point.
In the constructors’ standings, Brawn GP could not have done better, achieving a sensational one-two finish, and the team already has 18 points. In second position, we find Toyota as both of its drivers are in the points. Its total points are 10. Further down, McLaren-Mercedes probably did better than expected with 5 points.
Renault is 4th, matching its final position in 2008 with 3 points. Then, as in the driver standings, Williams and Toro Rosso bring up the rear with 2 and 1 point respectively.
Ferrari is starting the 2009 season just like 2008, which means very poorly. BMW-Sauber is doing worse than last year since no points have been scored this year.
Since the publication of the article and following Trulli’s penalty of an additional 25 seconds, the rankings have changed. Hamilton, Glock, Alonso, Rosberg, and Buemi each gain a point and consequently move up a position. Similarly, Bourdais ranks 8th with 1 point. In the constructors’ standings, McLaren moves ahead of Toyota with 6 and 5 points respectively. They are followed by Renault with 4 points, and Williams and Toro Rosso tied with 3 points.
See you in exactly one week to follow the evolution of these rankings since the Malaysian Grand Prix takes place next Sunday.
