A spokesperson for the FIA has just confirmed that the teams will be consulted before any changes to the points system for the 2010 season.
The decision to establish a system where the driver who won the most races in a season would be the champion was rejected by the FOTA (Formula One Teams Association).
Bernie Ecclestone made a point to clarify that the process was just delayed by a year. The director of Mercedes, Norbert Haug, stated that there was enough time for constructive conversations before that date.
The proposal from FOTA, apparently supported by surveys among fans, which was a points system of 12-9-7-5-4-3-2-1, was not adopted by the FIA. However, the driver who won a race was rewarded with an additional point.
If the ‘most wins’ system had been applied in 2008, Felipe Massa would have been the world champion since he won one more race than Lewis Hamilton.
But the Ferrari driver declared in Melbourne: « I am really not interested in this system, I am interested in what is good for our sport. »
A driver may win more races but be very inconsistent in their performances and not score many points. In that case, I think they do not deserve the title.
The FIA officially confirmed on Wednesday that the points system for 2009 would be the same as last year.
