Australian GP – Can the Brawn GP team do it?

The biggest question at the start of the 2009 season concerns the new Brawn GP team. Formerly the Honda team, bought by Ross Brawn likely for a symbolic $1, this team could well be the surprise of the year.

After developing a new single-seater, the BGP 001, the team conducted fabulous tests in March, sparking strong concerns among its competitors. This unwavering competitiveness is the result of Brawn’s immense capabilities. Today, the question everyone is asking is: Can Brawn GP upset the hierarchy?

Jenson Button – Racing Driver

The first race of the season has a somewhat special feeling because none of the teams know where their cars stand in terms of performance. Melbourne is a perfect city for a first race, it’s truly a beautiful place. The Albert Park circuit is fast and fun to drive with some very technical corners. I’ve always enjoyed driving on this track, especially during qualifying, where anything is possible.

« I arrived in Melbourne on Saturday so I could acclimate. I did some fitness exercises with my physiotherapist to prepare for the race. I am really looking forward to Sunday and making the most of our new car. »

Rubens Barrichello – Racing Driver:

« The Australian Grand Prix is one of my favorite races on the calendar, and the atmosphere at Albert Park during the weekend is always fantastic. This will be the start of my 17th season in Formula 1. After the somewhat chaotic winter we just went through, I am very motivated for the races and really looking forward to the challenges. »

The Albert Park circuit is quite technical where the average speed is relatively high, especially for an urban track. A high level of downforce is also needed. You can gain a lot of time through the chicane in turns 11 and 12. There are many bumps, and the braking on your car affects the rear. It is quite difficult to overtake on the circuit, but turns 3 and 13 offer greater opportunities.

Ross Brawn – Team Principal:

« Our ambition has always been to be on the grid for the first race of the season in Melbourne. I am very proud to have achieved this ambition. The Australian Grand Prix will mark the beginning of a new era for our team. »

During our testing program over the past two weeks, we believe that the BGP 001 is a good car and that the base is excellent for even more pronounced development throughout the season. We are very satisfied with the work accomplished and the pace of the car, but we are fully aware that our work is just beginning. Free practice in Melbourne will prove to be decisive, and we will need to cover as many kilometers as possible to enable Jenson and Rubens to fine-tune the setup of their single-seaters.
