Official – FIA Confirms Unchanged Points System

The FIA has officially announced that last year’s points system will be adapted again for the 2009 season and thus temporarily abandons the idea of determining the winner by the number of victories. The system will be as follows: 10 points for first place, 8 for second, 6 for third, then 5-4-3-2, and 1 point to reward the top 8 drivers.

Last week, the World Motor Sport Council approved that the world champion be determined by the highest number of victories in the season, rather than by the highest number of points.

This decision irritated the F1 teams and through their association, the FOTA, they complained about this regulatory change without their unanimous support.

The FIA immediately responded by stating that if the teams were not satisfied, it could revert to the original system.

This matter is now settled as the official 2009 sporting regulations state that the world champion will be determined by the number of points.

This chaos has sparked numerous reactions in recent days. Mark Webber, Red Bull Racing driver, was particularly shocked by the events of last week.

« We have changed our minds and we must now redeem ourselves with the public, » said the Australian.
