Second team equipped with KERS in Australia: Ferrari

Ferrari will use its KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) for the opening of the 2009 championship in Australia.

After successfully testing the system during the off-season, Ferrari will therefore adapt its KERS for the race on both of its cars (those of Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen).

The Scuderia is the second team after Renault to confirm the use of the system in Melbourne. The French manufacturer had revealed the information earlier in the week.

BMW-Sauber also claimed that its KERS was ready for the race, but the team has not yet decided on its use in the Antipodes.

In the end, Ferrari made significant progress in developing the system as the team had admitted a few weeks ago that they were behind and also facing some issues during testing.

The technical director, Aldo Costa, stated that the team’s plan had always been to be in Australia with the KERS, even though a contingency plan had been put in place.

« The objective is to arrive in Melbourne with a high-performing KERS, but we also have a plan B: It’s not another car, but simply a version without the KERS, » he had explained in January.
