The Bulgarian Republic is close to reaching an agreement with Formula 1 to host a Grand Prix in the Southeast of the country. The negotiations are being conducted by the BMF (Bulgarian Motorcycle Federation), whose president, Bogdan Nikolov, stated in the daily newspaper Dnevnik: “We expect to have an answer by next week.”
The BMF claims to have already secured the funds to build a track, which will host the MotoGP in 2011.
« Once we have signed a contract for F1, we will be able to build a second circuit, » assures Nikolov.
Another Bulgarian motorsports organization, the BFAS (Bulgarian Motor Sport Federation), reveals that Bulgaria has been involved in discussions with F1 for six months.
Georgi Yankoulov, president of the BFAS, is therefore eager to know the FIA’s stance.
« I do not think that the FIA can make a commitment before the start of the season, » he said.
« I can understand this position, but expectations are high. The task of organization is very complicated, especially in the current context of the economic crisis, with sponsors becoming increasingly scarce. »
As a reminder, India, South Korea, Russia, Portugal, South Africa, France, and the United States are also in the running to join – or rejoin – the F1 calendar.
