The prospect of the French Grand Prix returning to the Formula 1 calendar took another step forward yesterday when plans for a new circuit were unveiled.
After months of discussions to find a suitable location for the race, a new circuit could be built in Flins-Les Mureaux, northwest of Paris. As of now, this would be the most favored French option.
The course, which will be 4.5 km long, beat out three other projects aiming to host the event.
The track will have a very long straight line. The construction cost is estimated at 112 million euros. It was the cheapest of the four possibilities under consideration.
The French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte will work with British construction experts, Apex Circuit Design, who also helped build the Dubai Autodrome.
The circuit should be ready in time for the 2011 season, even if a final decision on the return of the French GP to the calendar can only be validated by Bernie Ecclestone.
