Alex Wurz remains under contract with the Brawn GP team, formerly known as Honda, but the Austrian admits he does not see how and when he could find himself in a driving position in 2009.
Brawn GP finally began its testing program this week in Barcelona, but race drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello will seize every possible opportunity to acclimate and develop the BGP001.
The first race of the year in Melbourne will take place in just over two weeks. From that moment on, the ban on private testing will come into effect. This is why the 35-year-old driver, normally a test driver, will only wear the reserve driver suit in 2009.
« The work continues, but more in a consulting role, » he stated to the Austrian press agency APA.
« I will work from a driver’s perspective, but my influence will be minimized by the regulations. »
In Austria, he is considered the best Formula 1 test driver. This notoriety dates back to his prominent role with McLaren at the beginning of the decade when test drivers were more commonly referred to as ‘third’ drivers.
« The great era of the test driver that launched my career is now over, » he stated.
