Although all his attention is now focused on his 2009 campaign, Lewis Hamilton, a driver for McLaren, took the time to make a short trip to Britain to receive his MBE (equivalent to the Légion d’Honneur in France) from Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace in London yesterday, Tuesday.
The world champion was part of the list unveiled in January, in recognition of his services to motor racing.
« Going to the Palace and meeting Her Majesty the Queen was an incredible experience. It was intense and exciting, » said the British driver after receiving his award.
« I am so proud of the welcome I received from every inhabitant of this country. »
« People support me and are enthusiastic even in tough times. They really helped me last year. Being recognized alongside people who have made a remarkable contribution to society is truly wonderful, and I want to thank Her Majesty the Queen, her government, and the British public. »
I would also like to thank my family who share my dreams and help me make them a reality. I would also like to thank my team, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, for giving me a chance when I was 13 years old. I still can’t believe I’m in Formula 1 and that I am now a world champion, it’s amazing.
Hamilton was honored alongside 120 other people with the Queen officially overseeing the ceremony in the palace ballroom.
