Sebastien Buemi remains realistic about Toro Rosso’s chances of being at the top of the standings this 2009 season, even though the team won a race last year.
The Swiss driver replaces Sebastian Vettel, who was hired by Red Bull Racing. The young German secured a dazzling victory last September at the Italian Grand Prix after claiming the pole position.
Aware that it will be difficult to replace Vettel, Buemi remains realistic but admits to feeling ready to do a good job in F1.
« In Formula 1, everything changes so quickly, and I would say that Vettel has done a fantastic job. We have to wait and see what our possibilities will be, » said Buemi in Barcelona during the launch of the new STR4.
« Of course, we want to put ourselves in a system of continuous improvement. We don’t want to take a step back and must keep in mind what we achieved last year. Nowadays, with the new rules, we must wait and be realistic, but at this very moment, I think we can do a good job. »
Speaking about his goals for the season, he continued: « It’s a bit too early to say. If the car is fast, we want to do something good, if it is not, we will then try to do our best. »
« But the objective is to beat my teammate, to prove that I can do it all season and be happy next November. »
He added: « I am very excited at the moment. I mean, I am really very happy to drive the new car. Melbourne will come quickly, we have this week in Barcelona, then the next in Jerez, and that’s it. So, I’m really looking forward to being in the car. »
Buemi will make his first Formula 1 Grand Prix appearance after finishing sixth in 2008 in the GP2 Series category. He will be the only rookie on the grid this year. However, the Swiss driver claims that his status is not important.
« Ultimately, when you’re in the car, it doesn’t really matter if you’re the only rookie or not. I want to focus as much as possible on my work, and that’s it. »
