Confirmed new schedule for the Australian GP

The organizers of the Melbourne Grand Prix have confirmed the new schedule for practice and qualifying sessions that will apply from this year.

The race will start at 17 local time to attract more European viewers, but the organizers have also adjusted the timing of the various practice sessions over the weekend.

The Saturday qualifying session is now at 5 PM local time, just like the race. The practice sessions will also start later.

Drew Ward, CEO of the Australian Grand Prix, stated that the new schedule should attract viewers who would normally not be able to attend the practice sessions.

« The changes made to the Friday practice schedules align with the Australian lifestyle as they will be after school and after work. »

« Everything has been done to ensure that race day, Sunday, is the most impressive. »

He added: « In the past, the Australian Grand Prix took place between the morning and the afternoon. The 2009 event will take place between the lunch break and sunset. This change in schedule, along with better entertainment in the late afternoon, should suit everyone; families, workers, and those who want this Australian weekend to be one of the most successful. »
