Fernando Alonso wanted to reaffirm that Renault’s goal for the 2009 season is to win both championships.
The double world champion managed to showcase all his talent at the end of the 2008 season and despite radical changes for this year, the Spaniard admits he is starting this campaign with optimism.
At the same time, he admits that achieving his goals will not be easy: « In 2009, we must aim very high. Our goal is to win the championship. Obviously, we know it will be difficult to achieve. »
« We know that our competitors are very strong, but we have to aim higher than ever, » the Spaniard told Eurosport.
He added: « When you win a driver’s title, along with the constructor’s title, it has a particular flavor. Both titles are therefore our goals. It’s very difficult to have such aspirations after the 2008 season, but our renewed energy in the fall changed our objectives. »
« From now on, before the start of the season, we must be optimistic. Winning two titles is our goal. »
The Renault driver thinks it is difficult to predict a favorite for the title due to the introduction of new rules.
« The drivers’ championship will be very open this year, because with the new rules anything can happen and all teams can be fast. »
« But it will be the strongest like Ferrari, McLaren, or BMW, who will fight for the title. »
Just like Pat Symonds, Fernando Alonso also believes that the KERS could be introduced on the R29 from the first race of the season.
Our system is really good. I think we will start the championship with it.
« It is true that this one might cause problems this year, but we must avoid as much as possible any trouble with this system. We need to test it a little more before the start of the season. »
