Mercedes-Benz wanted to reaffirm its total commitment to Formula 1 following a company vote in favor of maintaining a presence in the sport.
This rumor emerged from Germany over the weekend in the magazine Focus, suggesting that the board of directors of Mercedes-Benz, through the parent company Daimler, recently decided to stay in F1 after a favorable vote of 3 to 2.
This information emerged in a context of financial concerns from all car manufacturers due to the global economic recession.
But a spokesperson for Daimler stated that the source was incorrect and that in reality, no vote had taken place regarding the company’s plans in Formula 1.
« There was no vote by the Daimler board regarding Formula 1, » emphasized the Daimler spokesperson. « Apart from that, it is accurate to say that we are continuing our commitment. »
Mercedes-Benz returns to the forefront in the premier category of motorsport with Lewis Hamilton’s title in 2008 and aims for the constructors’ title in 2009 with McLaren. This would be a first since 1998.
