Fernando Alonso is in mourning. He went yesterday to Bellcaire d’Empordà, Spain, to bid a final farewell to his lifelong mentor Josep Marco.
The man, only 57 years old, died last Monday. He was the first to believe in Fernando Alonso. He provided him with the equipment to participate in KART competitions and has since been considered by Alonso as his adoptive father.
Fernando Alonso, who was then in Paris, immediately went to Spain to pay his last respects to his mentor. Several personalities from the motorsport world were also present. This included Carlos Sainz, one of the best rally drivers of all time.
Marco enabled the discovery of these two drivers, Alonso and Sainz, through the loan of his equipment, particularly in competition, as well as financial aid. He notably took Alonso under his wing by financing his last years in karting, when his parents could no longer afford it. Marco owned the brand GéniKart and had even created a KART team.
His company, which meant a lot to Fernando Alonso, was notably allowed to use the name of the 27-year-old driver for free.
