Honda has clearly stated that the rumors suggesting the team would remain in the sport thanks to assistance from the British government are completely inaccurate.
The Guardian announced yesterday morning that Honda Racing was in talks with the British government to receive a share of 2.3 billion pounds (more than 2.5 billion euros) under automotive industry guarantees.
The Japanese team initially refused to comment on this information, fueling the rumor that a bail presence provided by the British government (Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, BERR) could be part of a rescue plan for the team.
However, a spokesperson for Honda Motor Company stated that there had indeed been discussions with the BERR about the team but there was never a plan portraying the government as a patron.
« We met with the BERR several times to discuss how things are progressing, the team’s prospects, and its 700 employees, » the spokesperson stated.
« However, we have not met with the British government to discuss a potential guarantee, and no discussion involved government financial assistance. »
