The Renault and Red Bull Racing teams have confirmed that they will use the same KERS this year.
Red Bull Racing initially tried to develop its own system, but the results are far from conclusive. The fire at its factory in the middle of last year when the batteries overheated did not help matters.
The Austrian team has therefore concluded a new agreement with the team with the diamond logo, which is in a way an extension of its contract since its cars are equipped with Renault engines.
On the official Formula 1 site, the French team gives an interview about the progress made on its KERS and simultaneously announces that the team will provide its system to another team this season.
Christian Horner from Red Bull Racing also confirmed that his team was now waiting for data from Renault to install the system on its cars for the first race.
Horner then stated: « We will wait for Renault’s results before immediately using the KERS on the RB5. »
Although the teams seem to be at different stages of development of their KERS, Renault is skeptical about the chances of improving the device once it is used in races in 2009.
« If all teams use KERS, it will be used in the same way, on the same circuits, and at the same time. There will be no advantage. On the other hand, not having the system would be a huge handicap. »
« The development of electric motors capable of delivering 80 horsepower in minimal space and weight while operating in a very challenging environment represents an important step in energy recovery, » explained the team.
