Lose weight to be more efficient

According to the Spanish newspaper Diario AS, Fernando Alonso has lost 3.5 kg since the last race of the 2008 season.

Last year, he tipped the scales beyond 70 kg. The 27-year-old driver now weighs 67 kg after an intense program designed to maximize his chances with the new regulations that see KERS added to the cars.

The Iberian cycled for four hours a day during the off-season. He is now approaching the ideal weight for a rider, which is 65 kg.

« He has worked with cyclists and Fernando is stronger than ever, » stated his physical trainer.

« He cannot lose more weight because if he does, he would start to lose muscle strength and that’s not what we want. »

Even though cars are designed to meet a minimum weight, ballast must then be added to improve performance.
