This week, Fernando Alonso participated in a full training session with the team that won the last Tour de France. He reunited with his fellow Spaniard Carlos Sastre, winner of the event in 2008.
In parallel with his first tests this week at the wheel of the new R29, Alonso covered 110 kilometers, with an average speed of 37 km/h. Sastre’s current team, CSC – Saxo Bank, is training in the south of Portugal near the Algarve circuit.
The 2005 and 2006 world champion followed a rigorous training program during the off-season to lose weight. To date, he has lost four kilos.
« If his training had been more advanced, he could have reached a very good level in cycling, » commented Joaquin Novoa, for the Spanish newspaper AS, who is part of the CSC team.
In 2003, Alonso completed a similar training route with Lance Armstrong’s team.
