Launch – Unsurprisingly, BMW unveils its F1.09

BMW Sauber is the sixth Formula 1 team to unveil its 2009 car with the F1.09. The launch took place from Valencia in Spain.

The German team, whose goal this season is the title, was one of the first teams to run with a 2009 aerodynamic package during tests last December.

Willy Rampf, technical coordinator, claims that the new regulations for this year have made the creation of the new single-seater a real challenge.

« The development of a new Formula 1 car is always exciting, but this time there was something more special. We really started from scratch, » said Rampf.

« First of all, there were the tires with more grip, which causes a difference in balance on the single-seater. »

« Because the car significantly differs from the one in 2008, we started working on the concept in February 2008, two months earlier than usual before the F1.08 was even launched in a race. »

« Our objective was to build a car with great aerodynamic efficiency by recovering as much downforce as possible. »

« The development of the F1.09 is focused on three key areas: aerodynamics, optimal use of tires, and the integration of KERS. That is our starting goal, » added Riedl.

The F1.09 embodies the expertise of a highly motivated team that has managed to leverage all the obstacles encountered to achieve our ambitious objectives for this fourth year in F1.

The team based in Hinwil was one of the first teams to work with KERS, hoping that it would give them an advantage for the start of the 2009 season.

The director of BMW Motorsport, Mario Theissen, believes that this system will enable Formula 1 to be seen as the pinnacle of technology.

At BMW, we have always used Formula 1 as a technology laboratory for series production. With this approach, KERS takes on a whole new dimension.

The F1.09 completed an installation lap immediately after its presentation. It will continue its testing today. Its recent tests had allowed the discovery of the new single-seater long before its launch.
