Lewis Hamilton will defend his title as if he is making his debut in Formula 1, considering that he still has a lot to prove.
Speaking at the launch of the 2009 McLaren, Hamilton admitted he was confident for the new season, but insisted that his title did not shield him from multiple dangers.
« I feel more relaxed for this new season simply because I went through an intense year in 2008. It’s like when you win a race, you have much more confidence in yourself. »
« I believe that in 2009, I will keep the same goals as when I started in Formula 1. I want to be world champion. I shouldn’t tell myself that I am already world champion; I am sitting here saying I want to be a world champion, » stated the Briton.
Hamilton will never forget his performances in 2008 but does not wish to rest on his laurels either.
« Of course, there are moments I’m very proud of. I sometimes see myself again at a finish line, seeing the checkered flag and securing a victory, or conversely a bad race. »
« That being said, I try not to live in the past. It was a fantastic season, I am a world champion. »
He added that he had learned from his mistakes last year, but felt that occasional mistakes are part of learning.
“I analyzed the mistakes I made in 2008, such as the problem I had on the starting grid in Montreal,” said Hamilton.
« I’m sure that this year, too, there will be mistakes that will come as a surprise.
« Even the oldest man in the world is still learning things today. We just need to prepare in advance and try to avoid mistakes. »
