Bernie Ecclestone still hopes for a change in the point system in F1 so that the driver who has won the most races becomes the world champion.
The chief financial officer of Formula 1 is pushing to introduce an Olympic medal system. The driver with the most medals will simultaneously win the title.
Thursday, Ecclestone stated that he does not place importance on the use of this particular system or not, but the Briton wants a system that favors race winners.
« Forget the word ‘medal’, I think the driver who wins the most races should win the championship, » said Ecclestone.
« I don’t think that a driver who has more second places and a greater number of points deserves to be a world champion, that’s all. »
« This year, many drivers did not risk aiming for better than second place because the difference with the first position is only two points. It is not worth the risk, » he added.
Lewis Hamilton won the title last year after winning four races, while his main rival Felipe Massa finished second despite having five victories.
