The new Aragon circuit in the north of Spain is under construction. The goal is to host Formula 1 for testing purposes. According to the circuit’s director, organizing a Grand Prix is not something to consider at the moment.
The 5.3-kilometer track is expected to be completed by the end of the year to host the final phase of the World Series by Renault championship in October.
Although F1 testing is facing a significant setback, particularly with cost reductions, the directors of Aragon Motorland remain optimistic that their facilities will succeed in convincing the teams to use them during the winter.
The proper execution of the work is carried out by Hermann Tilke, who sought the help of McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa. The latter acts as a consultant.
Speaking on the Autosport International show stage about his ambitions in F1, the director of the Aragon circuit, Tome Alfonso said: « I think that for now, Spain needs F1. With two Grand Prix, one new circuit in the streets of Valencia and the other in Barcelona, the situation will remain as it is for many years. We cannot expect anything else, but testing is an option. »
« We know that there are testing restrictions now, but we have long straights on this track. »
De la Rosa stated that he saw in this project a new benchmark for motorsport in Europe.
« This is a long-term project that I have been involved in for a few years. It is this long-term vision that led me to be a supporter and a technical advisor for the Aragon project. It also has the support of the regional government. »
« It will be much more than just a circuit. It will be a complete city dedicated to motor racing fans. It is one of the most exciting projects that Spain will experience in the coming years, » concluded the Spaniard.
