The Pole was hailed by many, including Autosport magazine, as one of the best drivers of 2008 for staying in the title race for so long. Indeed, he was potentially the world champion until the last Grand Prix of the season.
Despite this performance recognized by a large number of observers, Kubica believes he needs to win the title to truly deserve this success.
The BMW-Sauber driver stated: The best driver is the one who scores the most points. That’s what’s important. However, it’s nice to see that fans believe in you, it’s a good feeling.
« But winning the world championship means much more because that’s what ultimately matters. In my opinion, it’s better to win and be told that I’m not such a good driver rather than finish fourth and have the fans say I did a good job. »
Kubica, who was briefly the leader in the world championship in 2008 after winning his first race at the Canadian Grand Prix, was overtaken by Kimi Räikkönen during the final stage of the season. He eventually finished just off the podium in fourth position.
However, he believes that his performances last year were important to position him as a favorite in 2009, especially after a rather disappointing 2007 season.
« It was important to show in 2008 what I was capable of, » added Kubica. « I was not good in 2007. Now, people know my level. »
Finally speaking on the upcoming performances of his BMW-Sauber team, Nick Heidfeld’s teammate stated: « It is too early to judge whether or not we can be champions. Ideally, we would fight for the championship even at the end of the season with better results than in 2008, but it is difficult to predict. »
« The 2009 season represents a real challenge with many changes in the regulations. »
