Fernando Alonso was voted the best driver of 2008 according to the Italian newspaper Gazetta dello Sport. The newspaper crowned the Spaniard for his good results with Renault, despite a very disappointing car at the beginning of the season. According to the daily, he was able to adapt and work with the engineers to get back in the race for victory.
The newspaper thus revealed yesterday, on the last day of the year 2008, its top 10 Formula 1 drivers. Fernando Alonso is therefore the first in this ranking, ahead of his eternal rival, the Englishman Lewis Hamilton. The world vice-champion, Felipe Massa, is third.
« Why Alonso? » asks the newspaper to its readers. « Because he was not driving the best car at the start of the season with Renault, but by having a very good cooperation with his engineers, they were able to get back among the leading teams. »
« This level of performance, » adds the newspaper, « allowed him to secure two victories, but most importantly, to score more points than anyone else in the last six Grand Prix. »
This article only fuels the rumors about Alonso’s move to Ferrari in 2011. Italy indeed wants Alonso in their team. « If Alonso were driving for Ferrari, they would have been champions, » continues the daily newspaper, very objectively. « Patience, to see him dressed in red, we’ll have to wait a few Christmases… »
Behind the Iberian, Hamilton climbs to the second step, just ahead of the world vice-champion, Felipe Massa. The newspaper explains this ranking by their mistakes made throughout the season.
Note that Sébastien Bourdais is not in the top 10 according to the Italian newspaper, nor are the Red Bull drivers. Here is the complete top 10, along with the reason:
1 – Alonso – Precision makes all the difference.
**2 – Hamilton** – Championship won, and few flaws.
3 – Massa – The man with the most victories in 2008.
**4 – Kubica** – Ready to win a championship with BMW.
5 – Vettel – Fast all season!
6 – Räikkönen – The alarm is triggered, it’s time to bounce back.
7 – Heidfeld – Four times 2nd and yet, still as inconsistent as ever.
8 – Trulli – Performances in private testing… but unlucky with the Toyota.
**9 – Glock** – Very good qualifications…
10 – Kovalainen – At times, he was off the mark…
