The current FIA president, Max Mosley, will be surprised and disappointed if the new 2009 regulations in Formula 1 do not result in more overtaking.
A complete overhaul of the aerodynamics, combined with the reintroduction of slick tires and the use of KERS, was introduced with the aim of spicing up the races in 2009. Several complaints had been received about the lack of overtaking in F1.
And even if many teams seem to be behind in the development of these elements, especially the KERS, Mosley is quite confident that things will improve.
« The 2009 aerodynamics were developed by three of the best engineers in Formula 1. A comprehensive program was undertaken in adherence to the wind tunnel, » commented the Briton on the official Formula 1 website.
« I could never certify that these changes would lead to more overtaking, but it would be surprising and disappointing if it didn’t happen. The KERS will be the cause of a significant difference for overtaking. »
He then addressed the thorny issue of engine freezing. Speaking about how this decision came about, Mosley added: The only problem with engine freezing has been controlling reliability issues, as some teams seem to have gained a bit in performance. We simply ensured that the sporting contest remains fair.
With the regulatory changes, the FIA also waged a battle over the hiring of its new track marshals and made several changes.
Mosley hopes that this directive will prevent a repeat of the events that occurred after the Belgian Grand Prix where Lewis Hamilton was the main protagonist.
« This change was made because some people criticized the race directors, » he explained.
« What needed to be done was to provide the viewer with the information so that they understand the decision. There will then be less chance that they will disagree. »
