Vettel is concerned about the safety around KERS

Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull Racing admitted that he was concerned about the safety aspects of the KERS, which will be in effect from next year.

Only a few months before the start of the new season, which will be accompanied by the arrival of KERS, several teams have not yet begun testing it on the track.

After several incidents, the most serious of which was the electrocution of a BMW-Sauber mechanic at the beginning of 2008, Vettel stated that he was wary of the progress made.

« For next year, and being honest, I am concerned about the safety of this system. Will it be safe enough for the race? » He admitted on the official Formula 1 website.

« For the teams, the expectations regarding KERS are clear, it must bring speed and it must be 100% reliable. »

« But I think there is one thing people have underestimated at this stage: Is it safe enough? We are a little over three months from the start of the season with the holiday break approaching. »

« Then, the teams will launch their new cars and start testing the KERS with them, time is short. »

« No one has truly thought about safety. As I said, it must be reliable, but it must especially be safe for us, the drivers, and all the people working around the car, » continued the German.

« Safety is the only thing I fear the most at the moment. I hope the teams will improve this aspect and that the FIA will properly oversee the situation. »

Red Bull Racing will test the KERS for the first time on its cars in February. This means the team will have about six weeks to implement the system and ensure it works properly before the Australian race.
