The Tata group announced today its participation in Formula 1 by becoming a partner of Ferrari. The Indian group will thus be present on the Scuderia cars through TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) starting from the 2009 season.
A spokesperson, making the announcement today in Mumbai, in the Northwest of India, commented: « TCS has concluded a historic agreement with Ferrari to offer it better technology and a partnership from a marketing perspective. »
Tata has been present with Ferrari since 2005 but only in the automotive world. Next year, the group has decided to make its appearance in F1 to counter the crisis, paradoxically in contrast to recent events concerning Honda.
The Japanese team withdrew from the grid for financial reasons. Tata, on the other hand, hopes to find in Formula 1 a brand image necessary for maintaining its activities worldwide.
The other key point that prompted the group to appear on the F2009 concerns the new cost-cutting measures in F1. Several agreements were signed in Monaco last week by the FIA to reduce expenses in F1. Tata, a group notably selling the world’s cheapest car, wants to take advantage of this reduction in costs, which fits perfectly into its marketing strategy.
