Lewis Hamilton won his first driver title just two years into his career. Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo stated that the Briton did not interest him at all for a potential exchange with Felipe Massa.
The two drivers fought until the last corner of the final lap of the Brazilian Grand Prix to claim the crown. In the end, Hamilton won over Massa by one point.
During the traditional Christmas party at Ferrari, di Montezemolo reminded that Ferrari and Massa form a perfect combination.
« Lewis Hamilton? Let me be clear: He is a great driver, capable of being vice world champion in his first year in Formula 1 and world champion the following season. However, with all due respect to him, I would not want to trade him for Felipe Massa, » explained Montezemolo to Gazzetta dello Sport.
When asked to respond to the words of the Briton who sees no point in driving for Ferrari as he wants to stay with McLaren for his entire career, the Italian stated: « Usually, it’s Ferrari that makes this choice. Ferrari is capable of making a driver popular. »
« Kimi Räikkönen arrived at Ferrari and won the title. If Massa didn’t win that year, it’s our fault. It would have been normal for him to win, but he couldn’t because of our mistakes. »
« Felipe is extremely popular. He is a great driver, and he demonstrated it in the most beautiful way when he lost that championship. »
