The French manufacturer PSA, which sells its cars under the Peugeot and Citroën brands, is said to have shown interest in acquiring the former Honda Formula 1 team.
The group has reportedly even made an offer to buy the Brackley team.
Citroën is already competing in the World Rally Championship by being world champion of drivers and manufacturers in this category. Peugeot is involved in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
Given the desire to significantly reduce costs in Formula 1, the PSA group is interested because it has not been as severely affected by the global economic crisis as some of its peers abroad.
The French government is also a major financial supporter as it intervenes in the automotive sector to limit job cuts and the closure of Renault and Peugeot-Citroën factories.
Sébastien Bourdais, Toro Rosso driver whose place within the Italian team is highly compromised for 2009, could be the new driver for this team with Jenson Button as a teammate.
