Fernando Alonso, currently testing for Renault in Jerez, has not considered the possibility of Renault leaving the world of Formula 1. He also did not expect Honda’s decision.
« I do not believe that Renault could pull out. The team has always had a good policy when it comes to Grand Prix racing, » explained the Spaniard to the newspaper AS.
« This is not a team that wastes money, and I think we are in a good position to win the championship next year. I don’t want to think about that possibility. »
Honda announced its immediate withdrawal from the sport last week and some believe another manufacturer might leave before the start of the 2009 season due to the financial crisis.
The double world champion admitted that he expects a difficult 2009 season due to the new regulations that will put all the teams on an equal footing.
« Yes, we will be at the limit of the car’s development. The regulations concerning the engines as well as the tires will be decisive, » added Alonso.
« Next year, all the teams will be neck and neck. I don’t know if there will be any spectacle, but at least more overtaking. »
