The future of the German Grand Prix at the Hockenheim circuit is dimming after an unforgettable 2008 race ended with a loss of several million euros. The government will therefore need to provide financial assistance to the venue in the near future.
« Without state subsidies, there would no longer be Formula 1 at Hockenheim, » indicated Karl-Josef Schmidt for the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel.
The circuit is not on the 2009 calendar because the German Grand Prix alternates with the Nurburgring.
According to the same newspaper, Hockenheim recorded a loss of 5.3 million euros this year after hosting the race in July.
On the same subject, the Canadian and French Grand Prix will not take place next year for financial reasons.
Schmidt believes that the Arab countries are and will be in the best position to host a Formula 1 race in the future, unless financial difficulties on both sides of the Atlantic subside.
« Formula 1 will disappear not only from Hockenheim but also from Germany as a whole. Then, it will establish itself in the Arab countries. »
There are currently five German drivers in the Formula 1 World Championship and the presence of manufacturers such as BMW or Mercedes.
