Mark Webber gave his first interview since his accident by announcing the date of his return. He will be back in February for the first tests with the new single-seater, the RBR5.
« My goal is to return to the track for the first tests of the 2009 season, » Webber told the BBC.
« The question is whether it is possible. If I had to wait a week or ten more days, I would, because it is for the good of the entire season. »
The Australian fractured a leg while cycling when a car hit him. He was then operated on Sunday where rods were inserted into his leg.
The 32-year-old driver admits that his main priority is to be in perfect shape for the season opener in Australia, which will take place at the end of March.
« I want to be sure to be in the best possible shape for the first race. The two lower bones in the leg are broken. But now I can stand up and walk with crutches. »
« We will see how my first tests go. If I perform well for three days, I could then join my team in qualifying and in the race for the Melbourne Grand Prix, » he continued.
This race takes place the last week of March. That’s when it matters to me.
With his condition, Webber is inspired by former drivers who have experienced injuries worse than his own.
« I think of Alex Zanardi or Mick Doohan. It’s a source of inspiration because my injury could have been worse. »
« I have never been in this position in my life and I can’t wait to see the progress day by day. I have good people around me. The team has been extraordinary. »
