However, Leon Sun, the organizer of the event, claimed that the comments made by Qiu Weichang, Deputy Secretary of State for Sports of the City of Shanghai, had been misunderstood.
« I spoke to Mr. Qiu and he never told me that Formula 1 was leaving China, » Sun told Reuters.
« I believe it is probably a misunderstanding. I would even say it is very likely that the race will remain on the calendar after 2010. By that time, we will have hosted Formula 1 for five years. To build a quality show, it is a long-term commitment. »

« Surveys show that there are more and more fans in China, so I don’t think we’ll say goodbye to the Shanghai F1 Grand Prix, » he concluded.
