It was on his bike that Australian Mark Webber, in Formula 1 since 2002, was hit by a car.
The accident occurred around 12:40 PM (local time) near Port Arthur in western Tasmania while he was participating in a stage of the ‘Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge’. This event, organized by Geoff Donohue, spans 250 km and includes several disciplines such as mountain biking, kayaking, and trekking.
While in an initial diagnosis the driver was said to be seriously injured, Geoff Donohue declared after the operation: « The operation is a success, a pin has been inserted, and now he is recovering gradually. »
« He suffers from some scratches on his left forearm and more seriously, a fractured right leg, but he has undergone a series of tests that indicate everything is fine, » he continues.
« He will stay in the hospital for at least three days, probably less than a week. I spoke to him before his operation and he was already thinking about his return. I think Mark is capable of flying, which will allow him to return to Europe. »
The Red Bull driver did not participate in the testing sessions in Barcelona. However, considering his fracture, he might miss most of the preparation program for 2009.
