Gené: « My big return to a real track »

After numerous laps completed not on a track but in a simulator as part of aerodynamic testing, Marc Gené is back this week, at the wheel of a Formula 1 car on a real circuit, specifically the Barcelona track.

The Scuderia Ferrari has officially asked its test driver to participate in these tests. For a few months, the Spaniard has been involved in other activities, such as being a driver for Peugeot in Formula 1 prototypes or even as a commentator on Sky Italia.

He is nevertheless happy to drive at home in a real Formula 1: « It’s wonderful to see Ferrari back on this circuit for real tests. I’ve worked a lot on this car at Vairano, but tests of this type are completely different. I haven’t covered a large number of kilometers this season, but we must keep in mind that we are close to the 30,000 km limit that was possible in 2008. »

The car is not exactly the same as during the aerodynamic tests: « We have gotten rid of as many small fins as possible to try to create the level of downforce we will have next season. »

There are also the tires that will play a crucial role in 2009. My first feeling is that the grip of the slick tires compensates for the reduction in downforce. Personally, I am working on setting up the car while trying to understand the new tires.

« Luca Badoer is working, in particular, on the engine’s reliability because in 2009, it will have to last for three races, » concluded Marc Gené.
