Taxpayers to the Rescue of the Canadian GP?

Montreal confirmed that it continues to work hard to see the Canadian Grand Prix return to the 2009 Formula 1 calendar. It is therefore possible in the coming weeks that this same calendar will be revised to add a race…

Even though the Quebec circuit is currently absent from the F1 schedule in 2009, Bernie Ecclestone is still in talks with local officials aiming to find a substantial financial package to pay off the Grand Prix debts accumulated over several years.

An idea currently proposed by Montreal would be to increase taxes directly linked to the race weekend. This could raise several million pounds.

The mayor of Montreal, Gérald Tremblay, stated in the columns of the Montreal Gazette that this idea, neither more nor less fiscal, was considered but he is aware that time is running out for him.

« We need a quick response. We need to know if we can organize a Grand Prix in 2009. We are trying to find an alternative that will meet the demands of Bernie Ecclestone and his board of directors. »

« He couldn’t care less about knowing where the money comes from, he just wants it! »
