The Renault F1 team ended the suspense, as expected this Wednesday, by revealing in a press release the names of its drivers for the 2009 season.
Fernando Alonso had already been unofficially confirmed, while Piquet was at the very least uncertain in the French team… Both men eventually extended their contracts for 2009 and even longer for Alonso.
The Spaniard has indeed signed with the team that enabled him to win two World Championship titles, until the end of 2010.
We are happy to confirm Fernando [Alonso] and Nelson [Piquet] for next season », commented Flavio Briatore, Managing Director of the team.
The Italian, who is currently living his final days as manager of Renault F1 Team, praised his line-up, a mix of youth and experience. He also expressed satisfaction with the (minimum) two-year contract with Alonso: « Fernando’s commitment for two seasons proves that he has confidence in the team and we are thrilled to continue our collaboration. He has been an undeniable asset throughout this season, his ability to unite and his talent, coupled with everyone’s efforts and determination within the team, have paid off as our recent results have shown. »
Fernando Alonso feels good at Renault: « I feel very happy and comfortable in this team. It’s a very close-knit team with a real competitive spirit and a thirst for success, all in a very relaxed atmosphere, which suits me perfectly. »
« After a mixed start to the season, we managed to overcome our difficulties and continuously improve our performances, » the Spaniard continues. « My two consecutive victories in Singapore and Japan, as well as my second place in Brazil, proved that we could be competitive. We won two championships in 2005 and 2006, and we have also managed to overcome more challenging times; we are now determined to repeat our past successes together. »
Nelson Piquet showed much more enthusiasm, perhaps fearing he might not be renewed: « Of course, I’m delighted to have the opportunity to continue with Renault for a second season. Despite a challenging first year, I have learned a lot and hope to use this experience to have a great season next year. I am very eager to work with the team this winter to start the 2009 championship very strong. »
