Record viewership for the Brazilian GP

In at least three European countries, last Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix was experienced as an event. Television channels broke audience records.

In France, TF1 averaged five million viewers during the race, setting a record for the broadcast of a Grand Prix during which Lewis Hamilton was crowned champion.

The figures represent a 25% audience share with a peak of eight million viewers for the checkered flag.

In Germany, the average number of viewers on RTL was 8.8 million, which represents a 31.5% market share.

For RTL, the peak audience was 9.46 million. This was recorded after the checkered flag when Felipe Massa was overwhelmed with emotions on the podium.

In Great Britain, the average also approached nine million viewers. ITV was broadcasting its last race since the rights were purchased by the BBC starting in 2009.

The peak audience reached 13.1 million viewers, representing 42% market share. These are the best figures recorded by ITV since the channel began broadcasting Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1997.

The only sporting event with a higher peak audience (14.6 million viewers) in Britain this year was the live coverage of the Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea last May.
