According to sources close to the ING Renault F1 Team, Renault has convinced Fernando Alonso to sign for an additional season. The recent rise in performance of the R28 helped in his decision-making: Alonso stood on the podium 3 times in the last 4 races of the 2008 season, including two victories and one second place. In the remaining 4th race in China, he finished 4th.
The agreement between Renault and Alonso should be signed on Tuesday evening and made official this Wednesday by Flavio Briatore, who experienced his last Grand Prix this weekend at the helm of the Renault F1 Team. He will soon be replaced by a close executive of the team.
“I will confirm my drivers on Wednesday,” admits the Italian. “I can’t say who they will be yet!”
On the other hand, nothing is certain for now about the second driver of the French team. Flavio Briatore is still hesitating between several choices. Among them, Di Grassi would be a last resort. The spot will be contested, we learn from the same source, between Grosjean or Piquet. The latter, with his year of experience in 2008, should be preferred: « We will see… » Comments Briatore. « But my second driver will not be a surprise either… »
Barrichello, who has not yet re-signed with Honda for next season, could also choose Renault. Bourdais is at the very bottom of the list and is rumored to be signing soon for an additional year with Toro Rosso.
