Michael Schumacher stated that his record of seven Formula 1 championships is there to be broken. He also believes that Lewis Hamilton might very well break this record.
It’s to the question « Do you think Hamilton could beat your record? » that Michael Schumacher responded « Yes, definitely! » on BBC’s microphone.
« Nobody thought, except me, that I could beat Fangio, yet I did it. Records are there to be broken. »
Schumacher won his 7th world title in 2004, beating the record of Argentine Fangio, which was 5 titles.
« I am quite relaxed about the idea that this could happen one day to Lewis, or Massa, or even to someone else. I have no problem with that. »
After winning his first title in 1994, Schumacher dominated the following 10 years, often battling with Mika Hakkinen. His last race was in 2006, on the same circuit where next Sunday’s showdown between Massa and Hamilton will take place.
The German remains impressed by Hamilton’s skills and reflects on the previous season: When you think about what he achieved in such a short time, freshly arrived among the drivers and then immediately becoming competitive and often faster than his teammate and reigning champion Alonso.
Sunday, the youngest world champion could be rewarded.
« Is he the best? Isn’t he the best? Is he better than Felipe Massa? » declares Schumacher.
