Nick Heidfeld has been penalized three grid places for the Chinese Grand Prix. The stewards considered that he impeded David Coulthard in qualifying.
The Scotsman was furious after Q1 because Heidfeld was on his cool-down lap while he was trying to secure his place for the second part of qualifying.
The Red Bull Racing driver also stated: « He knew he was destined for the top ten today. For me, it’s unsportsmanlike behavior. »
The commissioners took more than three hours to decide whether or not Heidfeld was at fault. This penalty leaves him in ninth place on the grid. Webber had initially finished 6th in the qualifying but loses ten places due to an engine change.
The lucky ones of the day are Vettel, Trulli, and Bourdais, who each advance two places and find themselves in 6th, 7th, and 8th positions respectively for the start of the Chinese race.
