Nelson Piquet admitted to having mixed feelings about his teammate Fernando Alonso’s victory at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The Brazilian started the race alongside Alonso from the eighth row of the starting grid. He was 18th before crashing into the wall and causing a safety car deployment.
« It’s a feeling between right and wrong. Fernando started the race next to me and won the race, which is good for Renault. At Hockenheim, the situation was equivalent for me when the safety car helped me. »
Piquet had opted for a one-stop strategy compared to three stops for his teammate Fernando Alonso. The Brazilian believes that if he hadn’t had his accident, he was very well positioned to take advantage of the second intervention of the safety car.
« It’s a mistake on my part. We tried two completely different strategies with Fernando in the hope of seeing the safety car come onto the track. If I hadn’t had that accident, the safety car would have brought me luck a little later in the race, » he commented about the Singapore Grand Prix.
The Brazilian rookie also believes that the team can now afford to be a bit more aggressive in the last three races of the season. The French team now has a five-point lead over Toyota for fourth place in the World Constructors’ Championship.
« I hope the team will keep the fourth place and we can even take a few more risks in the last three races. »
