The standings 3 GPs before the end of the season

With only the Japanese, Chinese, and Brazilian Grand Prix remaining, everything is still possible in the driver championship. Hamilton secures the essentials with his 3rd place in Singapore and the accompanying 6 points. He remains the leader and increases the gap with his pursuer Felipe Massa, who experienced this race as a slow agony. The two drivers now have a 7-point gap. [Rankings]

Behind, no change as Kubica and Räikkönen retain their 3rd and 4th positions respectively, but the Finn sees Heidfeld closing in by one point (57 against 56). Kovalainen remains 6th and Alonso 7th, but the surprise winner of the Singapore night GP increases his lead over Vettel, who is now 8th, and Trulli 9th (38 against 27 and 26). The young German moves up another place with 4 new points.

With 20 points, Webber sees Timo Glock catch up to him as the latter finished in 4th place in the Southeast Asian city-state. Rosberg achieved the best progress of the day by moving up two spots. His podium in Singapore allows him to move from 14th to 12th place and he now has 17 points. Piquet and Barrichello therefore drop down a rank.

Following in 15th and 16th positions are Nakajima and Coulthard who increase their points tally with 9 and 8 units respectively. No change at the bottom of the standings.

Then, a big change in the constructors’ standings as McLaren-Mercedes takes the lead in the 2008 season with 135 points against Ferrari’s 134, who pays dearly for Räikkönen’s retirement and Massa’s multiple errors in the last race. The remaining few weeks promise to be thrilling.

BMW-Sauber stays in contact even if the title chances are slim. The German team scores 3 new points for a total of 120. Renault is now alone in 4th place and has a 5-point lead over Toyota in 5th place (51 against 46).

Toro Rosso, Red Bull, and Williams maintain their 6th, 7th, and 8th positions, but the gap is very small and everything could change by Interlagos. Each team has 31, 27, and 26 points respectively. Honda is still 9th and Force India 10th.
