Berger waits before commenting on Bourdais

The co-owner of Scuderia Toro Rosso, Gerhard Berger, stated that he wanted to see more of Sébastien Bourdais before renewing the French driver’s contract for an additional year.

The four-time Champ Car champion remains in a position described as uncertain regarding his future for 2009, even though his performances in the last two races, where he qualified in the top ten, seem to have improved his chances.

However, Berger specified that Bourdais needed to work much more on his confidence in racing than on his pure speed.

« Yes, absolutely, » clarified Berger when asked if he needed time before making a decision regarding Bourdais.

« But it is certainly not on speed that I would base myself. It’s on his confidence. »

He added: « We are not in a hurry to make any decision. Let’s focus on Monza and then see afterwards. »

The Austrian, however, admitted that he was impressed by the Frenchman’s performance at the Belgian Grand Prix where Bourdais qualified in ninth position on the starting grid and finished the race in seventh place.

« He had a great race. If he could keep going like that, it would be fantastic. »

Berger concluded by saying he did not know the reason for Bourdais’s return to form following his problems caused by the introduction of the STR3.

« I don’t know. To be honest, it might be a lack of confidence, he might feel under pressure. »
