McLaren has officially announced whether it truly intends to appeal the decision made against Lewis Hamilton during the Belgian Grand Prix. And the answer is yes!
He was deprived of a victory at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday after the race stewards ruled that the Briton had gained an advantage over Kimi Räikkönen by cutting the chicane.
The penalty was 25 seconds added to his race time. This dropped him from first to third place. Felipe Massa, who finished second, therefore inherited this victory.
McLaren communicated to the FIA on Sunday evening that it intended to appeal this decision, even though there was uncertainty about whether or not the team was allowed to appeal against what is equivalent to a drive-through penalty in the race.
McLaren F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh stated: « We confirm that we are appealing the penalty imposed on Lewis Hamilton by the FIA stewards at the Belgian Grand Prix. »
