After the 13th round of the championship held in Belgium on the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the driver standings are shaken up, much like this Grand Prix! [Standings]
The retirement of Kimi Räikkönen benefits many drivers. This allows Hamilton, still leading, to widen the gap with Massa, in 2nd. There is now an 8-point gap (80 against 72). Kubica moves ahead of Räikkönen by a single point. The Finn is the big loser of this Belgian race, which has favored him in the past, and remains stuck at 57 points.
The surprise also comes from Heidfeld, who climbs onto the podium at Spa, earning 6 points that allow him to move up to 5th place, previously held by Kovalainen who doesn’t score any points. The German now has 47 points compared to the Finn’s 43.
Trulli maintains his 7th place but sees Alonso returning again in 8th, now just 3 points behind (26 to 23). The Iberian leaves Webber alone in 9th place. Vettel makes an incredible leap in the standings and joins Piquet with 13 points. They are tied for 11th place behind Glock.
Barrichello and Rosberg therefore lose a position and are 13th and 14th, respectively. They are followed by Nakajima and then Coulthard. Bourdais moves from 18th to 17th place at Button’s expense, thanks to two new points.
In the constructor standings, not much has changed. While McLaren had regained 25 points over the last four races against Ferrari, they can add two more tonight. The Scuderia now has 129 points compared to 123 for the team from Woking.
BMW and Toyota remain in 3rd and 4th place, but Renault, in 5th, comes back to within 6 lengths of the Japanese team. Red Bull Racing is still in 6th, while Toro Rosso joins Williams in 7th place with both teams having 17 points each. Honda sinks to 9th place, and Force India still brings up the rear.
