Scuderia Ferrari’s team principal, Stefano Domenicali, stated that reigning world champion Kimi Räikkönen will, if necessary, play a supporting role for his teammate Felipe Massa. The goal is to win both titles.
« If necessary, Kimi will support Felipe, » said Domenicali to the Gazzetta dello Sport.
« We talked about it at the beginning of the year. Before that, we must carefully watch how things develop. »
Räikkönen is having trouble keeping up with the Brazilian’s pace in the recent races. Moreover, the Finn hasn’t won a single Grand Prix since the one in Spain in April.
Massa is currently in second place in the standings with a seven-point lead over Räikkönen and has won twice as many races as him.
However, Domenicali is convinced of the return to the forefront of the former McLaren driver.
« For me, there is no problem. He will react, he will be performing well soon, and he knows how to stay away from criticism and controversies, » he added.
The team boss confirmed that it was up to Räikkönen’s engineering team to provide him with a car in which he feels comfortable.
« He is not satisfied with the way the single-seater engages in corners. He would like it to be more aggressive. This affects his driving, it’s up to us to give him a helping hand. »
Domenicali also insisted that Massa is strong enough to win the championship.
« We will have to provide him with an increasingly competitive car. He is mature enough to manage his position in the championship and win the title. We will help him as much as possible. »
The Italian conceded that Ferrari can no longer afford to lose points due to reliability issues. It will strengthen its quality control process.
« We can no longer afford the luxury of losing valuable points due to reliability issues. However, last year at the same time, McLaren had 35 more points and we had 16 more. »
« It was decided to strengthen controls over the entire component production. We have 40 people between metallurgy and the quality department. »
« In a week, the Belgian Grand Prix begins. From then on, it’s the final sprint with six races remaining, » concluded Stefano Domenicali.
