At the end of this first European Grand Prix on the Valencia circuit in Spain, Hamilton remains at the top of the driver standings. Räikkönen is the big loser as he loses his second place to his teammate Massa. [Standings]
Indeed, Hamilton now has 70 points, and Massa is only 6 points behind. Räikkönen is now third and remains at 57 points, directly under threat from Kubica for BMW-Sauber with 55 points.
The fight for 5th place promises to be fierce between Kovalainen and Heidfeld. It’s the Finn who moves ahead of the German after this round (43 points against 41).
Trulli, still 7th, scores 4 new points and leaves Webber and Alonso 8 points behind. The second Toyota driver, Timo Glock, scores two new points and remains 10th. Just like Piquet, Barrichello, and Rosberg who maintain their positions.
The latter being caught up by Vettel, who is having a superb weekend. The young prodigy is now in 14th place. Nakajima therefore loses a rank and there is no change at the bottom of the standings.
In the constructors’ standings, there is no change either among the 10 teams involved. However, McLaren-Mercedes is closing the gap with Ferrari. The Scuderia has 121 points compared to 113 for the Woking team.
Toyota pulls ahead of Renault with now a 10-point lead. Toro Rosso, still in 9th place, is getting closer to Honda.
