Paul di Resta, a Scotsman currently showcasing all his talent in the DTM series, believes he deserves Sebastian Vettel’s spot on the F1 grid.
At 22 years old, di Resta is certainly slightly older than Vettel, but the latter has fared better as he started his F1 driving career last year for Toro Rosso and is already confirmed for 2009 in Coulthard’s place at Red Bull.
Di Resta was beaten two years ago by Vettel in the prestigious F3 Euroseries but is now in his second season in DTM. This year, he is the driving force of the Mercedes-Benz team!
« I am not surprised by Sebastian’s performances but I deserve his place as much as he does, » he told the Scottish newspaper The Herald.
Di Resta laments a discrimination policy in F1 that would be based on the nationality of the drivers. He believes that being Scottish is less valued than being German like Vettel.
« You cannot ignore the fact that there is a dose of politics in this sport. »
« I am still young, but to be honest, I must not waste time if I want to secure a spot in Formula 1. »
« If at 25, I still have no opportunities, then it will be too late, » he added.
However, Di Resta insists that he is happy to continue working hard to achieve his F1 dream.
« There are hundreds of young drivers who are doing their best to change the course of things. I don’t want to waste time. »
« I have to win the DTM and there is no reason to think otherwise. »
