Renault suffers in 2008, not without reason

Renault team boss, Flavio Briatore, believes that Formula 1 needs a new lease of life to better satisfy fans and for teams to have more freedom and power of action.

The Italian also thinks that sport is currently suffering, for example with the Mosley affair.

« This void is felt because there is no concrete project in F1. The teams feel abandoned, » explained Briatore to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Speaking about the Formula 1 issues he faces every day, Briatore said: « The Concorde Agreement, the number of races, the costs, the spectacle, the goal of increasing revenue. Formula 1 needs to be reinvented. »

« We must decide with a majority of 51%, and not unanimously as is the case now, otherwise we will continue to be stuck. »

He added: « Today, Ecclestone takes 50% of all the revenues, but we are expected to reduce our costs by 50%. »

« How? Starting with the engines. By making them more environmentally friendly, accepting Mosley’s challenge to reduce fuel consumption by 50% by 2015, while reducing the high costs of engine manufacturing and personnel expenses. »

The problem is that Renault has strictly adhered to its commitments regarding the current regulations on engine freezing. Others have not managed to do so and are far ahead while we are suffering. It’s not fair.

Briatore and the other team principals are meeting today in Maranello to discuss the future of the sport.
